This Ft. Laramie scene was painted by Alfred J Miller in the late fur trade era. It's a wonderful painting, but we have to remember that paintings are not candid photographs. The folks pictured here no doubt seemed exotic to Miller, who was a white man, and he tried to convey that exotic-ness by painting them in restless poses and in colorful dress. To white people of his time, this would have confirmed their belief that Native Americans were "savage."
